#2017 End of Year Survey

2017 End of Year Survey.jpg

Hey, Bookworms!

Let’s welcome to the new year with a look back on how 2017 went in regards to reading. Hope you enjoy my bookish escapades, have a great year!

You can find the original post here at Jamie @ Perpetual Page Turner’s blog if you want to inquire or do it yourself. So without further ado, here are my book stats for 2017:

2017 Reading Stats

Number of Books You Read:

155 books + 49,620 pages

Number of Re-Reads:

4

Genre You Read the Most From:

Fantasy / Sci-Fi

2017 Best in Books.jpg

Best Book You Read In 2017?

The Hate U Give

The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas was the best book I read in 2017. It is such an important book for everyone to read and I’m so happy it’s been doing so well since it debuted back in February!

Book You Were Excited About & Thought You Were Going To Love More But Didn’t?

The Empress

When I heard there was going to be a sequel to The Diabolic I was so excited. Sadly what I got was a big bag of disappointment. Definitely didn’t meet my expectations and could have been so much better!

Most surprising (in a good way or bad way) book you read?

And I Darken

This was just plain bad. I went in thinking I was going to love it. I mean come on, a historical YA retelling of Vlad the Impaler but as a female? And what I got was 500 pages of pure boredom.

Book You “Pushed” The Most People To Read (And They Did)?

We Are the Ants

Not too shocking considering how much I love Shaun David Hutchinson’s books! All queer, all AMAZING. So what are you waiting for? GO READ IT.

Best series you started in 2017? Best Sequel of 2017? Best Series Ender of 2017?

  1. Best female anti-hero I read this year. Seriously. She gave me chills.
  2. It’s Harry Potter… k bye.
  3. Late to the game with this one, but it was well worth the wait!

Favorite new author you discovered in 2017?

Traci Chee is the lovely author of The Reader. Her writing is beautiful, her world building is stellar and her characters give me life!

Best book from a genre you don’t typically read/was out of your comfort zone?

What To Say Next

I read maybe 15 contemporaries last year of almost 160 books… so it’s safe to say it’s not a genre I read often. But saying that, this one hit it out of the park. A sweet little story where it’s okay to be a little different!

Most action-packed/thrilling/unputdownable book of the year?

Fireblood

I love this series so much. I just want to live in this world forever and ever!

Book You Read In 2017 That You Are Most Likely To Re-Read Next Year?

Autoboyography

This book makes you feel things. ALOT OF FEELINGS I DIDNT KNOW I HAD LIKE HOLY SHIT SO MANY EMOTIONS.

Favorite cover of a book you read in 2017?

The Last Namsara

Look at this beauty right here. The colors, the sparkles, the dagger! Heart eyes for days.

Most memorable character of 2017?

Empress Xifeng 100000000%

She is the ruthless character I was talking about up above. Though this is not the real Xifeng from the book, it just serves as what I envision Xifeng to look like!

Most beautifully written book read in 2017?

They Both Die at the End

The writing of this book was raw, real, and true to the setting and characters that inhabit New York. Because of this, it was very beautifully written. Like I cried real tears… I DON’T CRY OK. I DON’T.

Most Thought-Provoking/ Life-Changing Book of 2017?

The Hate U Give

If this book isn’t everyone’s answer to this question, then they either haven’t read it, or they are blind. There is nothing more important than the message from this book this year. Seriously.

Book you can’t believe you waited UNTIL 2017 to finally read?

HP and the Order of the Phoenix

Yeah I know. Crucify me now. Get it over with. I still haven’t finished reading the Harry Potter series. BUT I’m doing it slowly and surely!

Favorite Passage/Quote From A Book You Read In 2017?

At the Edge of the Universe

“It’s impossible to let go of the people we love. Pieces of them remain embedded inside of us like shrapnel. Every breath causes those fragments to burrow through our muscles, nearer to our hearts. And we think the pain will kill us, but it won’t. Eventually, scar tissue forms around those twisted splinters like cocoons. They remain part of us, but slowly hurt less.”

Shortest & Longest Book You Read In 2017?

From 98 pages to 870.

Book That Shocked You The Most

He Will Be My Ruin

Sexy thrillers FTW!

OTP OF THE YEAR (you will go down with this ship!)

Fight me on this. But I’m totally on board with Xifeng and the Emperor. Forget the little farm boy… muahahaha

Favorite Non-Romantic Relationship Of The Year

Yes this relationship had a slight crack into the romance side… but ultimately it was much more about the friendship!

Favorite Book You Read in 2017 From An Author You’ve Read Previously

At the Edge of the Universe

I will read anything this guy writes. He literally vibes off my soul and get’s me through his writing!

Best Book You Read In 2017 That You Read Based SOLELY On A Recommendation From Somebody Else/Peer Pressure:

Autoboyography

I seen that Maria from Big City Bookworm read this one and it sparked my interst so I picked it up for myself! And if you read above, you will know how much I loved it!

Newest fictional crush from a book you read in 2017?

My precious little Arcus baby. I just want to put him in my pocket and protect him forever!

Best 2017 debut you read?

Perfect Ten

This one made my heart skip a beat several times while reading it!

Best Worldbuilding/Most Vivid Setting You Read This Year?

The Last Namsara

This book is just beautifully written. You will literally be transported there and experience the story first hand!

Book That Put A Smile On Your Face/Was The Most FUN To Read?

The Gentleman's Guide to Vice and Virtue

This one was so amusing, I couldn’t not put it down for this one. Yes I know… I made a double negative. Fight me.

Book That Made You Cry Or Nearly Cry in 2017?

They Both Die at the End

First book ever to make me shed a tear… sadly there were many tears. Many many tears.

Hidden Gem Of The Year?

Runebinder

This book literally flew under the radar. No scratch that. It flew so low the radar couldn’t even pick it up. But seriosuly it was such a good read!

Book That Crushed Your Soul?

Autoboyography

This one will crush, stomp, rip, tear, and shred your heart and feels to pieces.

Most Unique Book You Read In 2017?

The Art of Starving

It’s not everyday you get a YA book where the main character who is male has an eating disorder. It was a nice change.

Book That Made You The Most Mad (doesn’t necessarily mean you didn’t like it)?

A Stranger in the House

Ugh…

Well that’s pretty much a recap of my reading year in 2017! I hope you guys enjoyed looking into my book life and I hope you all had just as an enjoyable year as I did!

Until next time,

February 2017 Wrap Up!

Is it just me or was the shortest month of the year the one that seemed to go by the slowest? It was probably just me, who am I kidding. Not a lot of things went down this month. I got to attend the HarperCollins HCCFrenzy Spring Preview this past weekend which was one. It’s always nice to here a publishing company talk about the books that they’re publishing. You can find the original post here at Jamie @ Perpetual Page Turner’s blog if you want to inquire or do it yourself. So without further ado, here are my book stats for 2016:

year-end-survery-1

Number of Books You Read:

73 books + 22084 pages

Number of Re-Reads:

0

Genre You Read the Most From:

Fantasy / Sci-Fi

year-end-survey-2

Best Book You Read In 2016?

Morning Star

Morning Star by Pierce Brown was the best book I read in 2016. It has hands down one of the best endings to a series I have ever written. I can’t wait for what Pierce Brown has in store for us next!

Book You Were Excited About & Thought You Were Going To Love More But Didn’t?

Labyrinth Lost

I was so excited to jump into Labyrinth Lost by Zoraida Cordova because witches and Latin culture… but sadly, the whole fantastical adventure and sloppy romance fell flat. Really flat. Sorry…

Most surprising (in a good way or bad way) book you read?

Tell Me Three Things

I’m not a reader of many contemporaries… especially the ones that are light and fluffy like Tell Me Three Things by Julie Buxbaum. So I was quite surprised when I finished this one and it shot up to one of favorites for the year!

Book You “Pushed” The Most People To Read (And They Did)?

Falling Kingdoms

Sorry to everyone that knows me personally, but I will never stop pushing Falling Kingdoms by Morgan Rhodes. This series is amazing and needs to be read by anyone and everyone. I even pushed it onto my boss and she loved it as well. So yeah. Go read it now!

Best series you started in 2016? Best Sequel of 2016? Best Series Ender of 2016?

Best series starter goes to Court of Fives by Kate Elliott. Seriously guys, this book is beautifuly written and vividly world built.

Best sequel goes to the fifth installment of Falling Kingdoms, Crystal Storm by Morgan Rhodes. This series just keeps getting better!

Best finale goes to Morning Star by Pierce Brown obviously. Scroll up to read why I love it so much!

Favorite new author you discovered in 2016?

Simon Curtis the debut author of Boy Robot is seriously an amazing human being. Follow him on twitter @simoncurtis and he’ll be your new favorite too!

Best book from a genre you don’t typically read/was out of your comfort zone?

Paper Princess

Not only do I rarely read contemporaries, but I definitely don’t read heavily filled romance books. Paper Princess by Erin Watt has a lot of sex, vivid descriptions, and a juicy story. I couldn’t get enough of it!

Most action-packed/thrilling/unputdownable book of the year?

Fate of Flames

I love love love the action sequences in this book! Fate of Flames by Sarah Raughley was such a thrilling adventure and I can’t wait to see where this series goes.

Book You Read In 2016 That You Are Most Likely To Re-Read Next Year?

Crystal Storm

As the Falling Kingdoms series is coming to an end this year with the six and final book, I will most likely be doing a re-read of the whole series, including the latest installment, Crystal Storm by Morgan Rhodes. I will never get enough of it!

Favorite cover of a book you read in 2016?

The Sun is Also a Star

Look at this crazy beautiful cover for The Sun is Also a Star by Nicola Yoon. Not only is the cover pretty, but the story is also sweet and lighthearted. One of my favorite reads of the year!

Most memorable character of 2016?

Darrow from Morning Star by Pierce Brown is the most memorable character for me. He is stripped raw and deep for us all to read. The shit he goes through during this series is exceptional. I will never forget him and his story.

Most beautifully written book read in 2016?

The Swan Riders

Swan Riders by Erin Bow was such a beautifully written book. It was lyrical, but scientific. It was raw and real but also fantastical and other worldly. I highly recommend this book!

Most Thought-Provoking/ Life-Changing Book of 2016?

We Are the Ants

My life will forever be changed after reading We Are the Ants by Shaun David Hutchinson. I have never reflected so much about my own life after reading a book before, but this one does that. What may be insignificant you others, might mean the world to you.

Book you can’t believe you waited UNTIL 2016 to finally read?

HP and the Goblet of Fire

Yeah… that’s right. I am still trying to finish the Harry Potter series. Can you believe it is now 2017 and I still have 3 more books to go. I read Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire this year and it is by far my favorite in the series. Let’s see what the rest of them deliver for me!

Favorite Passage/Quote From A Book You Read In 2016?

We Are the Ants

Unlike memories, which are fossils, long dead and buried deep. Your entire sense of self-worth is predicated upon your belief that you matter, that you matter to the universe. But you don’t. Because we are the ants.

Shortest & Longest Book You Read In 2016?

Night Flower by Kate Elliott is a short story from the Court of Fives world about the main character’s parents and how their forbidden love blossomed. It was 50 pages. On the other hand Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire is 734 pages long and by far the longest book I read this year. And never a dull moment either!

Book That Shocked You The Most

Behind Closed Doors

Behind Closed Doors by B.A. Paris was a wild ride I must say! It was creepy, thrilling, and most definitely quite shocking at times. It is a must read to find out what really happens to this couple behind closed doors!

OTP OF THE YEAR (you will go down with this ship!)

Of course is is Cleo Bellos and Magnus Damora from Frozen Tides by Morgan Rhodes. These star crossed lovers burn very bright in the fourth installment that I read way back in January. They hurt the feels with every word and page.

Favorite Non-Romantic Relationship Of The Year

It’s been a while since I read a YA book that didn’t have the main characters falling in love. So it came as a surprise that Kate and August from This Savage Song by Victoria Schwab stayed totally platonic throughout the whole book. I do think thing may change for them. But I am completely content with their non-romantic relationship right now.

Favorite Book You Read in 2016 From An Author You’ve Read Previously

We Are the Ants

I love Shaun David Hutchinson’s writing so much, so it comes as no surprise that I also loved We Are the Ants. He is forever on my auto-buy list now and I am now awaiting his 2017 release anxiously!

Best Book You Read In 2016 That You Read Based SOLELY On A Recommendation From Somebody Else/Peer Pressure:

Air Awakens

I get recommendations left right and center all the time. It’s very seldom that I pick them up though right away. But Air Awakens by Elise Kova has been at the forefront of recommendations for a while now. I bit the dust and dove right in and I’m glad I did. I can tell this series is going to be epic!

Newest fictional crush from a book you read in 2016?

I pick up book boyfriends very easily. I seem to have a type for the brooding, sometimes princes, sometimes warrior types that are dark, quiet, and mysterious. So it comes as no surprise that I latched onto to Azriel from A Court of Mist and Fury by Sarah J. Maas. He checked pretty much all the boxes.

Best 2016 debut you read?

The Serpent King

The Serpent King by Jeff Zentner blew me away. It was such a beautiful story of friendship and aiming for more than what people expect of you. But that climax/almost ending moment broke my heart to pieces and will forever live in my heart.

Best Worldbuilding/Most Vivid Setting You Read This Year?

Court of Fives and Poisoned Blade by Kate Elliot has some of the most vivid and masterful world building I have ever read. From the landscape, to the history, to the traditions/religion/customs, to even the smaller things, every aspect was done perfectly. I highly recommend this book for anyone who loves fantasy and diverse characters!

Book That Put A Smile On Your Face/Was The Most FUN To Read?

Archie Vol. 1

Guys it’s Archie Andrews! My childhood was the Riverdale gang and all their shenanigans. It comes as no surprise that once I found out that Archie was getting a modern makeover that I would be all over it. Archie Volume One by Mark Waid and Fiona Staples was exactly everything I could have asked for from a reboot! Such a fun read.

Book That Made You Cry Or Nearly Cry in 2016?

The Serpent King

Like I said above, The Serpent King by Jeff Zentner has one of the most heartbreaking scenes I have ever read in it. Now I’m not a book cryer (I have yet to cry from a book), but this one had me close. I got the cry shudders that come before the tears come. I will never be the same!

Hidden Gem Of The Year?

The Impostor Queen

No one talks about this book enough. The Impostor Queen by Sarah Fine is so underrated that it makes me want flip tables. It was such a fun and exciting fantasy read for pretty much anyone! There is magic, LGBT characters, romance, action, fire and ice… pretty much everything a good story needs!

Book That Crushed Your Soul?

More Happy Than Not

If you want to be reduced to nothing but a puddle of feels and tears then you need to get your hands on More Happy Than Not by Adam Silvera. This beautifully raw and real story will crush your soul until there is nothing left for you to feel. Completely heartbreaking!!

Most Unique Book You Read In 2016?

Seven Ways We Lie

Seven Ways We Lie by Riley Redgate is told in seven points of view and each character’s personality and actions reflect one of the seven deadly sins. I thought this was very unique and quite intriguing to read.

Book That Made You The Most Mad (doesn’t necessarily mean you didn’t like it)?

We Know It Was You

I don’t even want to talk about this trash. We Know it Was You by Maggie Thrash is filled with horrible characters, a corrupt storyline that makes no sense, and extreme racism. I mean how can all the villains be POC? Seriously? Ugh. DON’T READ THIS BOOK.

The Books that appeared most in my 2015 year end survey are:

Well that’s pretty much a recap of my reading year in 2016! I hope you guys enjoyed looking into my book life and I hope you all had just as an enjoyable year as I did!
