Mid-Year Book Freak Out Tag.jpg

Hey Bookworms!

2017 has been an exciting book reading year for me. I have almost already surpassed the amount of books I read last year and we are only 6 months into the year. Here’s to doubling that and reading some amazing books!

1. BEST BOOK YOU’VE READ SO FAR IN 2017?

I have 2 books for this question. Neither one surpassed the other in greatness in my opinion. I loved them both to death!!

The Book Blogger Test

Hey Bookworms!

Today I thought it would be fun to do a tag, but not tag anyone. Basically I just wanted to do something fun without the hassle of going through my follows and tagging others to do it as well. So if this interested you, then by all means and give it a try!

It all started at Laura from Laura’s Book Reviews!

The rules:

You must answer all of these questions truthfully and once you’ve completed this tag, tag 5 other book bloggers to answer the questions next.

What are your top three book pet hates?

  • Cover changes after I bought the first book!
  • Bending page corners to mark place in book.
  • Being talked to while I’m trying to read. Can’t y’all see the book in my face?

Describe your perfect reading spot.

Man I wish I had a cool reading corner/room/nook because that would be the most ideal reading spot. Sadly, I have either my bed or the rocking chair in the living room.

Tell us three book confessions.

  • I only just got a library card for the first time last month. (I’m 25 years old)
  • I go into book stores just to smell and flip through the books.
  • I reorganize my book shelves every month.

When was the last time you cried at a book?

Hmm… I don’t think I’ve cried while reading a book. I have come super close though.

More Happy Than Not by Adam Silvera

The Serpent King by Jeff Zentner

The 5 Stages of Andrew Brawley by Shaun David Hutchinson

How many books are on your bedside table?

Five… yeah. I’m a book polygamist.

What is your favorite snack whist you’re reading?

I can’t eat and read at the same time. I find it too distracting and I don’t want to dirty the pages. So I will just brew some tea or have water/juice with me.

Name three books you’d recommend to everyone.

Falling Kingdoms by Morgan Rhodes

Red Rising by Pierce Brown

We Are the Ants by Shaun David Hutchinson

Show us a picture of your favorite shelf on your bookcase.

I am way too lazy to snap a picture of my shelf, and they are overcrowded and messy at the moment. But here is a picture of someone else’s beautiful shelf!

Beautiful Book shelf

Write how much books mean to you in 3 words.

Couldn’t live without.

What’s your biggest reading secret?

I secretly love audio books. Why is this a secret? Because I used to trash them and say how horrible they are and how hard it is to focus while listening to them.

I was wrong.

Well there you have it, The Book Blogger Test! Like I said above if you guys want to do this too, by all means. I tag EVERYBODY!

Unpopular Opinions Book Tag #2

unpopular-opinions-tag

Hey guys!

I’ve done this tag on my old blog 2 years ago and I thought that since the time has passed, and my opinions have changed I could do another one.

I was not tagged by anyone to do this. I just thought it would be fun to revisit it!

 1. A popular book or series you didn’t like.

I read the first book and it passed. Then the second book came and it flopped so hard I will not be continuing with the series.

2. A popular book or series that everyone else seems to hate but you love.

The Cruelty

It’s not so much that people don’t like this book, it’s that they didn’t like the author. In his first interview after he sold his book he decided to trash the genre that he is writing. Not a good move. But it was a good book!

3. A love triangle where the main character ended up with the person you did NOT want them to end up with (warn people for spoilers) OR an OTP that you don’t like.

HP and the Deathly Hollows

You all know who should have ended up with who…

4. A popular genre that you hardly reach for.

Contemporary

5. A popular or beloved character that you do not like.

Sorry Chaol fans. He just missed his mark on this one!

6. A popular author that you can’t seem to get into.

Victoria Aveyard

As I said above. The first book was decent. Then the author messed up with the second book and so on… girl bye.

7. A popular book trope that you’re tired of seeing.

The chosen one trope is getting pretty annoying if I’m going to be honest. Why can’t someone be average or normal and still be able to save the day?

8. A popular series that you have no interest in reading.

Always and Forever, Lara Jean

I can’t even remember what the names of the first two books are… HA.

9. The saying goes “The book is always better than the movie”, but what movie or T.V. show adaptation do you prefer more than the book?

Riverdale

Does Riverdale count? It’s not that I don’t like the comics this show originated from… it’s just I love the direction the show is taking!

Well there you have it! My unpopular opinions. Sorry if you disagree, but that’s just me. If any of you want to do the tag, by all means. I would love to hear your unpopular opinions too!

I am back again to do another tag. I believe I did this one in the past, but I thought since I came across it again that I would try my hand again at this. The original creator of the tag is Mariana @ Fireheart Books. So go check out her blog!

Rules:

The rules are simple. For every letter of the alphabet you must name a book that begins with that said letter. That’s it.

Now that all the housekeeping rules are out of the way, let’s get started!

cny-zodiac-book-tag-rat

Court of Fives by Kate Elliott has flown way under the radar. Honestly guys. You need to read this series! The first 2 books are out and the third will be out this summer. Go read it!

Court of FivesOn the Fives court, everyone is equal.

And everyone is dangerous.

Jessamy’s life is a balance between acting like an upper-class Patron and dreaming of the freedom of the Commoners. But away from her family, she can be whomever she wants when she sneaks out to train for the Fives, an intricate, multilevel athletic competition that offers a chance for glory to the kingdom’s best competitors.

Then Jes meets Kalliarkos, and an improbable friendship between the two Fives competitors—one of mixed race and the other a Patron boy—causes heads to turn. When Kal’s powerful, scheming uncle tears Jes’s family apart, she’ll have to test her new friend’s loyalty and risk the vengeance of a royal clan to save her mother and sisters from certain death.

Darrow from Red Rising by Pierce Brown is a character that has strong beliefs and will to achieve them. Don’t get in the way of his crusade to save his people. You will get cut down!

Red RisingDarrow is a Red, a member of the lowest caste in the color-coded society of the future. Like his fellow Reds, he works all day, believing that he and his people are making the surface of Mars livable for future generations.

Yet he spends his life willingly, knowing that his blood and sweat will one day result in a better world for his children.

But Darrow and his kind have been betrayed. Soon he discovers that humanity already reached the surface generations ago. Vast cities and sprawling parks spread across the planet. Darrow—and Reds like him—are nothing more than slaves to a decadent ruling class.

Inspired by a longing for justice, and driven by the memory of lost love, Darrow sacrifices everything to infiltrate the legendary Institute, a proving ground for the dominant Gold caste, where the next generation of humanity’s overlords struggle for power. He will be forced to compete for his life and the very future of civilization against the best and most brutal of Society’s ruling class. There, he will stop at nothing to bring down his enemies… even if it means he has to become one of them to do so.

More Happy Than Not by Adam Silvera boldly addresses a couple issues involving LGBT themes. Mainly homophobia, bullying, and drastic measures to hide who you really are. It will resonate with it’s readers in a profound way!

More Happy Than NotIn the months after his father’s suicide, it’s been tough for 16-year-old Aaron Soto to find happiness again–but he’s still gunning for it. With the support of his girlfriend Genevieve and his overworked mom, he’s slowly remembering what that might feel like. But grief and the smile-shaped scar on his wrist prevent him from forgetting completely.

When Genevieve leaves for a couple of weeks, Aaron spends all his time hanging out with this new guy, Thomas. Aaron’s crew notices, and they’re not exactly thrilled. But Aaron can’t deny the happiness Thomas brings or how Thomas makes him feel safe from himself, despite the tensions their friendship is stirring with his girlfriend and friends. Since Aaron can’t stay away from Thomas or turn off his newfound feelings for him, he considers turning to the Leteo Institute’s revolutionary memory-alteration procedure to straighten himself out, even if it means forgetting who he truly is.

Why does happiness have to be so hard?

cny-zodiac-book-tag-rabbit

Carry On by Rainbow Rowell has such a sweet romance in it. It takes forever before we get to the good stuff, but Simon and Baz are well worth the wait. You can’t help but swoon over them!

Carry OnSimon Snow is the worst chosen one who’s ever been chosen

That’s what his roommate, Baz, says. And Baz might be evil and a vampire and a complete git, but he’s probably right.

Half the time Simon can’t even make his wand work, and the other half, he sets something on fire. His mentor’s avoiding him, his girlfriend broke up with him, and there’s a magic-eating monster running around wearing Simon’s face. Baz would be having a field day with all this, if he were here – it’s their last year at Watford School of Magicks, and Simon’s infuriating nemesis didn’t even bother to show up.

Queen of Hearts by Colleen Oakes is all about royalty. And a very famous royal at that. Who doesn’t fear the Queen of Hearts from the tale of Alice in Wonderland? I know I sure did. So why not go back to her teen years and see why she turns out so wicked and cruel! Off with your heads!!

Queen of HeartsAs Princess of Wonderland Palace and the future Queen of Hearts, Dinah’s days are an endless monotony of tea, tarts, and a stream of vicious humiliations at the hands of her father, the King of Hearts. The only highlight of her days is visiting Wardley, her childhood best friend, the future Knave of Hearts — and the love of her life.

When an enchanting stranger arrives at the Palace, Dinah watches as everything she’s ever wanted threatens to crumble. As her coronation date approaches, a series of suspicious and bloody events suggests that something sinister stirs in the whimsical halls of Wonderland. It’s up to Dinah to unravel the mysteries that lurk both inside and under the Palace before she loses her own head to a clever and faceless foe.

Part epic fantasy, part twisted fairy tale, this dazzling saga will have readers shivering as Dinahs furious nature sweeps Wonderland up in the maelstrom of her wrath.

The Wish Granter by C.J. Redwine has one of the most manipulative characters I have ever read. Alistair Teague, the wish granter will stop at nothing to get you to sign your soul away. Always remember to read the fine print… you might be doing more than just selling your soul to the devil!

The Wish GranterThe world has turned upside down for Thad and Ari Glavan, the bastard twins of Súndraille’s king. Their mother was murdered. The royal family died mysteriously. And now Thad sits on the throne of a kingdom whose streets are suddenly overrun with violence he can’t stop.

Growing up ignored by the nobility, Ari never wanted to be a proper princess. And when Thad suddenly starts training Ari to take his place, she realizes that her brother’s ascension to the throne wasn’t fate. It was the work of a Wish Granter named Alistair Teague who tricked Thad into wishing away both the safety of his people and his soul in exchange for the crown.

So Ari recruits the help of Thad’s enigmatic new weapons master, Sebastian Vaughn, to teach her how to fight Teague. With secret ties to Teague’s criminal empire, Sebastian might just hold the key to discovering Alistair’s weaknesses, saving Ari’s brother—and herself.

But Teague is ruthless and more than ready to destroy anyone who dares stand in his way—and now he has his sights set on the princess. And if Ari can’t outwit him, she’ll lose Sebastian, her brother…and her soul.

History is All You Left Me by Adam Silvera is an epic standalone that I read last year for a review. Now that is it finally out, you all have to go out a buy yourself a copy. It’s a beautiful story of love, loss, and dealing grief!

History is All You Left MeWhen Griffin’s first love and ex-boyfriend, Theo, dies in a drowning accident, his universe implodes. Even though Theo had moved to California for college and started seeing Jackson, Griffin never doubted Theo would come back to him when the time was right. But now, the future he’s been imagining for himself has gone far off course.

To make things worse, the only person who truly understands his heartache is Jackson. But no matter how much they open up to each other, Griffin’s downward spiral continues. He’s losing himself in his obsessive compulsions and destructive choices, and the secrets he’s been keeping are tearing him apart.

If Griffin is ever to rebuild his future, he must first confront his history, every last heartbreaking piece in the puzzle of his life.

The Star-Touched Queen by Roshani Chokshi has by far the most beautiful cover design of 2016! There were a lot of strong contenders for this category, but it ultimately had to go to this book. Just marvel at the pretty colors and landscape!

The Star-Touched QueenFate and fortune. Power and passion. What does it take to be the queen of a kingdom when you’re only seventeen?

Maya is cursed. With a horoscope that promises a marriage of death and destruction, she has earned only the scorn and fear of her father’s kingdom. Content to follow more scholarly pursuits, her whole world is torn apart when her father, the Raja, arranges a wedding of political convenience to quell outside rebellions. Soon Maya becomes the queen of Akaran and wife of Amar. Neither roles are what she expected: As Akaran’s queen, she finds her voice and power. As Amar’s wife, she finds something else entirely: Compassion. Protection. Desire…

But Akaran has its own secrets—thousands of locked doors, gardens of glass, and a tree that bears memories instead of fruit. Soon, Maya suspects her life is in danger. Yet who, besides her husband, can she trust? With the fate of the human and Otherworldly realms hanging in the balance, Maya must unravel an ancient mystery that spans reincarnated lives to save those she loves the most…including herself.

Nikolai from the Grisha series by Leigh Bardugo. He cracks jokes, fools around and is just overall a fun character to read. Definitely a highlight to this series that wouldn’t be the same if he wasn’t apart of it!

Siege and StormDarkness never dies.

Hunted across the True Sea, haunted by the lives she took on the Fold, Alina must try to make a life with Mal in an unfamiliar land. She finds starting new is not easy while keeping her identity as the Sun Summoner a secret. She can’t outrun her past or her destiny for long.

The Darkling has emerged from the Shadow Fold with a terrifying new power and a dangerous plan that will test the very boundaries of the natural world. There are so manu great books coming out this year, and as not all of them have been revealed for the later half of this year, I will give you my most anticipated for the first 6 months. And it’s a tie! Check them out:

RoarIn a land ruled and shaped by violent magical storms, power lies with those who control them.

Aurora Pavan comes from one of the oldest Stormling families in existence. Long ago, the ungifted pledged fealty and service to her family in exchange for safe haven, and a kingdom was carved out from the wildlands and sustained by magic capable of repelling the world’s deadliest foes. As the sole heir of Pavan, Aurora’s been groomed to be the perfect queen. She’s intelligent and brave and honorable. But she’s yet to show any trace of the magic she’ll need to protect her people.

To keep her secret and save her crown, Aurora’s mother arranges for her to marry a dark and brooding Stormling prince from another kingdom. At first, the prince seems like the perfect solution to all her problems. He’ll guarantee her spot as the next queen and be the champion her people need to remain safe. But the more secrets Aurora uncovers about him, the more a future with him frightens her. When she dons a disguise and sneaks out of the palace one night to spy on him, she stumbles upon a black market dealing in the very thing she lacks—storm magic. And the people selling it? They’re not Stormlings. They’re storm hunters.

Legend says that her ancestors first gained their magic by facing a storm and stealing part of its essence. And when a handsome young storm hunter reveals he was born without magic, but possesses it now, Aurora realizes there’s a third option for her future besides ruin or marriage.

She might not have magic now, but she can steal it if she’s brave enough.

Challenge a tempest. Survive it. And you become its master.

Dividing EdenTwins Carys and Andreus were never destined to rule Eden. With their older brother next in line to inherit the throne, the future of the kingdom was secure.

But appearances—and rivals—can be deceiving. When Eden’s king and crown prince are killed by assassins, Eden desperately needs a monarch, but the line of succession is no longer clear. With a ruling council scheming to gain power, Carys and Andreus are faced with only one option—to take part in a Trial of Succession that will determine which one of them is worthy of ruling the kingdom.

As sister and brother, Carys and Andreus have always kept each other safe—from their secrets, from the court, and from the monsters lurking in the mountains beyond the kingdom’s wall. But the Trial of Succession will test the bonds of trust and family.

With their country and their hearts divided, Carys and Andreus will discover exactly what each will do to win the crown. How long before suspicion takes hold and the thirst for power leads to the ultimate betrayal?

The Falling Kingdoms series by Morgan Rhodes is my go to comfort book. It’s an epic high fantasy series everyone should give a try! I love every book as the story progresses further and further. I’m so sad that this chapter is ending with book 6 this year. I am going to have to go into mourning in 2018! T___T

Falling KingdomsIn the three kingdoms of Mytica, magic has long been forgotten. And while hard-won peace has reigned for centuries, a deadly unrest now simmers below the surface.

As the rulers of each kingdom grapple for power, the lives of their subjects are brutally transformed… and four key players, royals and rebels alike, find their fates forever intertwined. Cleo, Jonas, Lucia, and Magnus are caught in a dizzying world of treacherous betrayals, shocking murders, secret alliances, and even unforeseen love.

The only outcome that’s certain is that kingdoms will fall. Who will emerge triumphant when all they know has collapsed?

It’s the eve of war…. Choose your side.

Princess: Raised in pampered luxury, Cleo must now embark on a rough and treacherous journey into enemy territory in search of magic long thought extinct.

Rebel: Jonas, enraged at injustice, lashes out against the forces of oppression that have kept his country cruelly impoverished. To his shock, he finds himself the leader of a people’s revolution centuries in the making.

Sorceress: Lucia, adopted at birth into the royal family, discovers the truth about her past—and the supernatural legacy she is destined to wield.

Heir: Bred for aggression and trained to conquer, firstborn son Magnus begins to realize that the heart can be more lethal than the sword….

This or That Tag

this-or-that-tagHey guys!

I was tagged by Amanda from My Books Opinion Site, so you should check out her blog! A lot of great content.

Rules

  • Mention the creator of the tag (Ayunda @ Tea and Paperbacks)
  • Thank the blogger who tagged you
  • Choose one of the options, you don’t have to tell the reasons why you chose that but you can also do them if you want to.
  • Tag (10) other people to do this tag to spread the love!

Reading on the couch or on the bed?

Bed

bed-read

I don’t get much reading done when I’m in bed because, hello, it’s just so damn comfortable. BUT I do prefer it over reading on the couch because there are way less distractions. No TV, no parents talking, no constant movements.

Male main character or female main character?

Male Main Characters

male-main

This is rare in young adult fiction. But my reasoning behind this, is that I can relate more to male characters than I can to female characters. When I read a book with a female main, I tend to connect more with the male side characters/love interests. Maybe that’s just me!

Sweet snacks or salty snacks?

Sweet Snacks

candy

Don’t get me wrong, I love me some chips and popcorn once and a while, but I am definitely more prone to picking up the sweet stuff. Cookies, candies, gummies etc.

Trilogies or Quartets?

Trilogies

trilogy

Sometimes there just isn’t enough story to make it a 4 book series. But if there is, then I don’t mind. Trilogies do seem to properly pace books though.

First Person POV or Third Person?

Third Person

book-throew

I read a lot of fantasy/sci-fi so it makes sense and reads better when they are in third person. I feel like contemporaries suit the first person narrative more.

Reading at night or in the morning?

Morning

morning

I am a morning person as uncommon as that is. I wake up really early thanks to my biological clock and tend to get a lot more done too. Especially when it comes to reading, my mind is more awake and alert in the morning than it is at night.

Libraries or Bookstores?

Bookstores

bookstore

Sorry libraries, I do want to get into you more, but bookstores will always win. I love the atmosphere of bookstores from the smells, to the shelves! I never feel more at home than I do when I enter a bookstore!

Books that make you laugh or books that make you cry?

Laugh

laugh

As much as I try to find a book to make me cry, I still haven’t accomplished that. Maybe I am just too cold hearted. But gimme me a comedic book and I will be laughing out loud. Mamrie Hart (Youtuber), and Mindy Kaling have some awesome funnies you should read!

Black Book Covers or White Book Covers?

Black

black-book

I like dark aesthetics. I mean the majority of my wardrobe is black, navy, and grey. So if all the books came in black covers, I think it would match my personality better!

Character Driven or Plot Driven?

Plot Driven

plot

I like when stories have a purpose and are going places. With a properly written plot driven story, you can still see some great character development. This is probably because I am a huge SFF buff.
