The Good

Morning Glories Vol. 3: P.E. by Nick Spencer and Joe Eisma was a wild but confusing ride for me. On one hand I love all the secrets and lies, and on the other, I still have no clue what the heck is going on. That might pose more of a problem as the volumes go on…

The stories behind what brought each of our six main characters to Morning Glory Academy have been fleshed out and better explained, while also somehow becoming even more complex and mysterious. But, weirdly, I’ve had no problem with the jumps back and forth in time, and I even like the way there’s no division, no break whatsoever, between the timelines as we read them. Some actually alternate from one frame to the next – here’s Casey now, here’s Casey then, here’s Casey now, etc., right down one page – and it works.

With every exchange between the students – good (?) girl Casey, lovable geek Hunter, tormented Jade, psychopath Ike, silent-but-maybe-deadly Jun, and homicidal mega-bitch Zoe – we get to know them so much better, and Spencer does this without using dull exposition dumps. Each character really does have a distinct voice, and none of them are one-dimensional. Indeed, I’m not even sure all of them – hell, ANY of them – are what we’ve been led to believe up to now… I wonder if even the characters know for certain what their true natures are, or what they’re capable of…

And oh, my goodness: an actual, honest, loving gay relationship subplot? I’m thrilled to see it done in a totally non-shocking, non-exploitative way, and it’s a love story I’d want to read more about, regardless of the sexes involved. I definitely did not see that coming!

The Bad

I just don’t understand what is going on. I have never been so confused about a story in my entire life. With so many characters and so many sub-plots to pay attention to, the actually story must be getting lost in the background. If you know what is going on here, please enlighten me… because this is getting ridiculous.

The Good

Morning Glories Vol. 4: Truants by Nick Spencer and Joe Eisma is starting to lose me. The confusion and utter lack of answers is beginning to annoy me. But let’s discuss the good stuff first.

The cover is pretty? Yeah that’s all I got.

The Bad

I just don’t get it. This was supposed to be the ending of the first season’s story arc. But it just felt like even more unanswered questions. Don’t even get me started on the introduction of 6 new students to mess you up. I spent most of this issue trying to figure out who is who, because to be honest the artwork of the characters are all starting to look alike. Especially Irina and Akiko.

I’m beginning to think Spencer has no idea what is going on either. This is starting to get dragged out for far too long just to print more issues. How about we start answering questions before new plots and ideas start making it to the page?

This volume just frustrated me beyond belief. Here’s hoping the next volume doesn’t continue on the decline it’s currently going on.

As you can see, my opinion drastically changes between volumes 3 and 4. This series is beginning to lose it’s spark with me, but I will give it two more volumes to change my mind before letting it go. Let me know what you guys thought of Morning Glories Volumes 3 & 4 by Nick Spencer and Joe Eisma! I would love to hear your opinions as well!

Until next time,

The Good

  • This graphic novel hosts a bunch of main characters into the mix. It follows 6 troubled/gifted teenagers as they as thrust into this new boarding school from hell. (Not literally hell though). I thought each character was unique and had their own voice. They reacted to situations appropriately due to their character traits and stayed true to themselves. My personal favorites were Jun and Zoe!
  • I thought the plot was very unique. My interest was always at it’s peak from beginning to end. There is still so much more to discover in the future volumes. Especially WHY this kind of school even exists and what their purpose is with these kids.
  • Another great point to Morning Glories Vol 1 is the artwork. I thought it was well done and realistic to teenage proportions. And the fact that it includes 2 PoC main characters is awesome to see visually as well.

The Bad

  • There wasn’t too much that disappointed me with this volume other then the bland looking cover. But it’s the same style for all the volumes… so I guess that is what worked the best!

The Good

  • Diving into Morning Glories Vol 2, we finally get some back story of all the characters. We find out how they got to their current point in life and the driving factors that cause them to do what they do. With all the heavy character growth in this volume, it doesn’t take away from driving the plot forward which was nice.
  • I also quite enjoyed the writing a little more this time around. Maybe because it is starting to sound more authentic coming from the characters that makes it more believable for me.
  • And of course Eisma doesn’t disappoint with his amazing artwork.

The Bad

  • The plot / world is getting a bit dry for me. Although the plot is moving forward, I still feel like I’m missing some critical information. My who, what, when, where and why censor is going crazy with how little information we got this time around. I know this volume was a character growth storyline, I just wish my curiosity got a little sated this time around. I guess there is always Volume 3!

So if you guys are looking for a thrilling new graphic novel to read, then I highly suggest you pick this one up. You’re in for a wild ride!
