Kenzie holds one truth above all: the company is everything.

As a citizen of Omnistellar Concepts, the most powerful corporation in the solar system, Kenzie has trained her entire life for one goal: to become an elite guard on Sanctuary, Omnistellar’s space prison for superpowered teens too dangerous for Earth. As a junior guard, she’s excited to prove herself to her company—and that means sacrificing anything that won’t propel her forward.

But then a routine drill goes sideways and Kenzie is taken hostage by rioting prisoners.

At first, she’s confident her commanding officer—who also happens to be her mother—will stop at nothing to secure her freedom. Yet it soon becomes clear that her mother is more concerned with sticking to Omnistellar protocol than she is with getting Kenzie out safely.

As Kenzie forms her own plan to escape, she doesn’t realize there’s a more sinister threat looming, something ancient and evil that has clawed its way into Sanctuary from the vacuum of space. And Kenzie might have to team up with her captors to survive—all while beginning to suspect there’s a darker side to the Omnistellar she knows.

Caryn writes novels for teens and anyone else who likes a bit of the bizarre to mess up their day. She lives with her husband and a horde of surly and entitled animals in southern Alberta.

Author Post

What inspired you to write Sanctuary? Was there any pop culture references that helped you create the characters?

I wrote Sanctuary when I was coming out of a writing slump. I knew I needed a project I was really excited about to get me moving again, and Sanctuary was exactly that project. It combines so many of the things I love: outer space, superpowers, an element of corporate dystopia, and deep relationships with friends and family. Those were the things that motivated me and kept me writing.

I obviously drew pretty heavily on the sci fi and stories I loved in my youth when creating Sanctuary. I didn’t base any of the characters on these stories, but Aliens, Firefly, and the X-Men all had heavy influences on my tastes and writing. For the heavy atmosphere, I relied on my experiences playing survival horror video games, from the original Resident Evil and Silent Hill all the way through to more current experiences like Until Dawn and the latest Alien game.

I actually think it was those survivor horror games that really drove me in creating Sanctuary. I’ve loved them since my early teens. Playing the first Resident Evil game was a revelation for me. Back then I couldn’t afford many games so the ones I did have I played over and over… I think I can still recite the entire script of Resident Evil 2 word for word! But obviously my love of comic books, anime, and sci fi all played a huge role in inspiring Sanctuary. In many ways the book is a homage to all of those things I love and the many hours of creativity, joy, and excitement they gave me when I was growing up (and let’s be honest, to this very day!).

Review

Sanctuary by Caryn Lix is super powered, alien invading, colossal space station, thriller! It follows Kenzie, a junior officer onboard a space station filled with super powered teen criminals. Her days are pretty mundane when it comes to her life on Sanctuary, until the unspeakable happens; alien overtaking.

I had such a fun time reading this that it was hard to put it down once I started. It blends a lot of different concepts and elements that I enjoy as a reader. Aliens, super powered teenagers, high stakes storyline, and of course the secrets and lies!

I really enjoyed Kenzie as the MC! She grew up knowing only the Omnistellar Concept way of life and anything else that could harm the Corp is wrong. It was fun to see her ideologies and world as she knew it come down to lies and pretty much brain washing. Her dynamic with the super powered teens was also really fun to read. The friendships that bond, and the relationships that spring forth all bring the characterization in!

If you have ever watched Alien vs Predator, then that is pretty much what you’re in for in terms of the aliens. I was so creeped out and often times disgusted every time they appeared on page. My anxiety went through the roof but in an enjoyable way if that makes sense at all.

I also thought the main plot point of the alien invasion was pretty awesome. It was pretty unique and exciting.

As you can tell, I pretty much enjoyed every second of this book, and I am super excited to find out that their is going to be a sequel! I can’t wait!
