The Hundredth Queen & The Fire Queen by Emily R. King is the first and second books in the Hundredth Queen series. The first two books in this series takes readers on a journey following a girl that was thrust into a life she never wanted and with mystical powers she never expected to have.

The Hundredth Queen follows Kalinda, and orphan that is being groomed to serve the royals if they choose her. She just wants to live in solidarity at the Sisterhood’s temple, but what happens takes her life on a roller coaster ride. The tyrant and ruler of their lane, Tarek, visits the temple looking for his 100th wife. Within a day she is taken along with other girls to compete with his other ninety-nine wives in a deadly contest of strength. Her only escape lies within her, a power that is misunderstood and feared by many.

What I liked about The Hundredth Queen was the mythical world building. I really enjoyed the vivid descriptions and the cool aspects King uses as plot devices. The writing, although nothing mind blowing, was easy to follow and kept my interest throughout the whole story.

Although there was a few problems, there was also some good highs. I thought the characters were nice and fleshed out but I am still not sold on the romance. Kalinda is a fierce character that also comes with flaws. I can’t wait to see her character growth the most.

The Fire Queen picks up after the first book and follows Kalinda’s journey to achieve her destiny in a world of sorcery and mystical powers. After the exciting ending of The Hundredth Queen I was excited to see where Kalinda’s journey will now take her.

What we get is another exciting addition to the series. We get more world building and answers to burning questions (no pun intended). I’m really loving the fictional mythology behind the secrets of this world that Kalinda is learning she belongs to. We get introduced to new characters and possible future love interests. I know some readers dislike love triangles, but I secretly love them, so bring it on King!

There is more explosive battles, new revelations, and more secrets to be had in this sequel and I can’t wait to see where this story takes us!

Have you read The Hundredth Queen and it’s sequel? What did you think?

Let me know in the comments!

Until next time,
