In the kingdom of Sempera, time is currency—extracted from blood, bound to iron, and consumed to add time to one’s own lifespan. The rich aristocracy, like the Gerlings, tax the poor to the hilt, extending their own lives by centuries.

No one resents the Gerlings more than Jules Ember. A decade ago, she and her father were servants at Everless, the Gerlings’ palatial estate, until a fateful accident forced them to flee in the dead of night. When Jules discovers that her father is dying, she knows that she must return to Everless to earn more time for him before she loses him forever.

But going back to Everless brings more danger—and temptation—than Jules could have ever imagined. Soon she’s caught in a tangle of violent secrets and finds her heart torn between two people she thought she’d never see again. Her decisions have the power to change her fate—and the fate of time itself.

The Review

Face-Loved

Everless by Sara Holland is the first book in a new fantasy series about a world where time is currency. The more you give the older you become and vice versa for the more you receive. It follows Jules as she desperately wants to help her dying father out with his debts. She takes up a servant job at the Everless estate where her father once worked in order to prevent her father from giving away all his time. What she doesn’t know is that there is a bigger reason her father took her away from that castle and she is all too eager to find out why.

As the first fantasy book of the year, I was ecstatic about how freaking good it was. Like hot damn! I was enamored from beginning to end. I loved the world, the characters, and the plot-line; so riveting.

There is nothing more than I love than court drama and Everless does not disappoint. From the mysterious but ruthless Queen to the young Lord that used to be her childhood friend. Every character was set up so nicely. And we mustn’t forget the Caro… she’s the Queen’s maidservant, but oh so much more!

I quite enjoyed Jules as the MC in more ways than one. She has weaknesses and strengths and she really comes into herself as the story progresses and she finds the answers she never knew she needed. She’s the type of character that you just can’t help but root for!

The plot-line was so interesting. Holland mixes her story with history and lore that was both dark and bleak. Nothing was ever as it seemed and I enjoyed that aspect a lot! There is so much more to be discovered and I can’t wait to find out what happens next!

Have you read Everless? What did you think of it?

Until next time,

  1. I think I really loved the premise, it’s full of metaphors of real-world issues, so the world-building is really interesting. I didn’t love Jules’ voice though and the prose doesn’t stand out… also, I figured out the big twist about the Sorceress too early on 😑 but I’m still curious to how it all pans out, I’m just not very anxious for the sequel as I normally would be.
