The battle for the Crown has begun, but which of the three sisters will prevail?

With the unforgettable events of the Quickening behind them and the Ascension Year underway, all bets are off. Katharine, once the weak and feeble sister, is stronger than ever before. Arsinoe, after discovering the truth about her powers, must figure out how to make her secret talent work in her favor without anyone finding out. And Mirabella, once thought to be the strongest sister of all and the certain Queen Crowned, faces attacks like never before—ones that put those around her in danger she can’t seem to prevent.

In this enthralling sequel to Kendare Blake’s New York Times bestselling Three Dark Crowns, Fennbirn’s deadliest queens must face the one thing standing in their way of the crown: each other.

Three Dark Crowns – Book #1

One Dark Throne by Kendare Blake is the sequel to the ever popular Three Dark Crowns from last year. The ascension year has begun and the three queens are now on edge. The sequel picks up right away and Mirabella, Arsinoe, and Katharine must now make plans to take down their sisters. The sequel is jam packed with new secrets and revelations, action around every corner, and fast paced character developments. Definitely doesn’t follow the second book syndrome.

My biggest highlight from One Dark Throne was the character development this time around. In the first book I felt like it was kind of lacking. All three sisters in my opinion were all pretty bland. BUT this time around, Blake steps up her game and breathes life and personality into them. A once shy and timid Katharine is now cold and cut throat. The strong and confidant Mirabella has shown that she can be vulnerable as well. And the tough Arsinoe proves what it takes to be a leader and take charge.

The plot is also moving at a quick pace. A certain queen takes no time in trying to murder her sisters which builds excitement and anticipation. I thought the plot was very driven and well-rounded this time and provides a better foundation for the direction of which the Blake seems to be taking it.

I loved all the little reveals and character arcs in One Dark Throne. Nothing was as it seems or set up to be from the beginning. There is definitely more to the world and characters that are getting revealed little by little. Each queen is growing and developing their own distinct hero/villain type personalities as well.

Katharine is the character to look out for. After what happens to her in Three Dark Crowns, she comes back dark and sinister almost. Her character has done a complete 180 from the timid and quiet girl we were introduced to. I look forward to see what’s behind this new change in her.

So, for a sequel, One Dark Throne does a fantastic job and I can’t wait for the next installment in the series!

Author 197Kendare Blake is the author of several novels and short stories, most of which you can find information about via the links above. Her work is sort of dark, always violent, and features passages describing food from when she writes while hungry. She was born in July (for those of you doing book reports) in Seoul, South Korea, but doesn’t speak a lick of Korean, as she was packed off at a very early age to her adoptive parents in the United States. That might be just an excuse, though, as she is pretty bad at learning foreign languages. She enjoys the work of Milan Kundera, Caitlin R Kiernan, Bret Easton Ellis, Richard Linklater, and the late, great Michael Jackson, I mean, come on, he gave us Thriller.

She lives and writes in Kent, Washington, with her husband, their cat son Tyrion Cattister, red Doberman dog son Obi-Dog Kenobi, rottie mix dog daughter Agent Scully, and naked sphynx cat son Armpit McGee.
