Empire of Storms by Sarah J. Maas is the fifth installment in the Throne of Glass series. A land on the brink of war. Where does Aelin’s allies and enemies motives lie? As the plot thickens and a big battle one the horizon, Aelin must call upon old friends and gain the trust of new ones to come out victorious!

Even when this world is a forgotten whisper of dust between the stars, I will always love you.

My Likes

Character Arcs

As this is the fifth installment of the series, we are getting into the thick of the plot this time around. With many of the characters being further developed and the new characters getting explosive introductions. Empire of Storms is a huge fantasy read, so you better believe there are a ton of characters to keep track of.

I liked diving in and exploring on a more personal level of the character’s lives and personalities.

World Expansion

Empire of Storms takes you on a swashbuckling journey. Grab your pirate hats and telescope, the Throne of Glass world is expanding! Maas takes it to new heights this time around. I love everything pirates so when I was reading this I was all in.

The world Maas builds is masterful. All the descriptions were so vivid in my mind. From the waters to the ships to the islands. Everything about it was perfect!

He was hers and she was his and they had found each other across centuries of bloodshed and loss, across oceans and kingdoms and war.

Never a Dull Moment

You know we’re getting into the thick of the story at this point. There is so much action, character drama, sex and romance around every page. Maas takes it up a level and ignites your imaginations that makes you want to continue reading and reading well into the night.

I can’t imagine what else she has in store for us. I mean, there are still two more books to go. I feel like she is still only scratching the surface!

My Dislikes

Why All the Pairings?

OK. I know this a Maas novel and in has become the norm in her books for every character to fall in love or hook up with another character. BUT in Empire of Storms I felt like EVERYONE and their friends were pairing up.

It boils down to be a tad bit ridiculous. Come on, not everyone is going to fall in love with their travelling companions, and you don’t have to pair everyone up to please your readers. It pretty much takes away all the fun in shipping certain characters.

The fear of loss . . . it can destroy you as much as the loss itself.

I highly recommend this one if you like epic fantasy series, pirates, magic and more magic. Let me know what you guys thought of Empire of Storms by Sarah J. Maas! I would love to hear your opinions as well!

Sarah J. MaasSarah J. Maas is the New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of the Throne of Glass series (Queen of Shadows, Book 4, will be out in September 2015), as well as the A Court of Thorns and Roses series (out 5/5/15).

Sarah lives in Bucks County, PA, and over the years, she has developed an unhealthy appreciation for Disney movies and bad pop music. She adores fairy tales and ballet, drinks too much tea, and watches an ungodly amount of TV. When she’s not busy writing, she can be found exploring the historic and beautiful Pennsylvania countryside with her husband and canine companion.

  1. I adore this series and I’m glad you’re enjoying it! It’s a masterfully written series, I honestly can’t get over some of the things that have happened because it was so brilliantly executed.

The pairings are a bit much, I agree. Why can’t they just be friends, maybe have a partner left at home? The ACOTAR series is the same though, with everyone being paired up. Personally it doesn’t affect the story much, and without the pairings many situations would have been different so maybe it’s for the best

    • I don’t know. I need more variety. All the couples are just blending into each other. They all read the same to me. It’s getting too tedious.

BUT overall I like the direction of the story. So I’ll keep going.

  2. I’ve really grown to love this series, book 3 was my favourite. For this book though, Aelin really annoyed me. She kept everything secretive. And I do love it when the characters even hide things from the readers and it’s this big ‘OMG WTF?!’ moment when it’s revealed. But I feel like these books have them so often now, so at the end, I was not surprised about everything that was revealed that Aelin had done that the readers didn’t know about. It just annoyed me… I just really don’t like her. Am I the only one?!

I love Elide though! She and Mannon are my favourite characters. Although I want Mannon to be more fierce with Dorian.

    • It’s true. As a MC Aelin has a lot of work cut out for her so the reader doesn’t switch to disliking her. I actually find Elide dull. She has a lot of potential, but I haven’t seen it yet.

As for Manon, hands down one of the highlights left in this series. Her chapters excite me!
