The Couple Next Door by Shari Lapena is mystery and suspense novel about the repercussions of leaving your baby home alone and the struggles to keep a family with too many secrets together.
I must say that the marketing for this The Couple Next Door was highly effective, at least here in Canada. Everywhere I went there was an advertisement for it. One the subway trains, at bus stops, all over the Indigo/Chapters stores. It was part of the reason that piqued my interest.
From the very beginning The Couple Next Door had me on the edge of my seat. I just needed to know who kidnapped the baby and the reasons behind why the parents thought it was a good idea to leave her behind to attend a dinner party next door. So the mystery and suspense was on point in this book!
The characters were well fleshed out during the duration of the book. Anne has a dark past that not many people know about and she continues to doubt herself if she harmed Cora the night of her kidnapping. Marco seemed to be the level headed one of the couple, but we soon learn the struggles he goes through when he is at work. And don’t get me started with their neighbors Cynthia and Graham. I was quite surprised with their impact on the story!
Lapena does a fantastic job with the writing. She knows when to reveal information, but never too much at a time. This resulted in my many frustrated, but thrilling gasps as I hurled my book across the room. I’m the type of person that likes to have the facts. So I knew I had to get through this book ASAP. Luckily it is such a quick and easy read that I finished it within two days.
I still can’t get over that last chapter though. It was the perfect way to end the The Couple Next Door. Creepy as hell!!
While I’ll enjoyed the mystery of who took baby Cora, there was still much left to be desired. There are some certain plot points that I didn’t agree with and wish things went in a different direction.
The big big reveal near the end was definitely one of them. To avoid spoilers, I will opt out any information about it. Just know that I wish the person behind the kidnapping of baby Cora was someone else or that their motives for doing so were a little more compelling.
Then their was the narrative voice Lapena decided to tell the story in. At times it got lost on me. Anne did this, Anne did that, Marco this, Marco that. Here is an example of what I am talking about:
Anne wilts in the heat of the summer night and watches her hostess with narrowed eyes. Cynthia is flirting openly with Anne’s husband, Marco. Why does Anne put up with it? Why does Cynthia’s husband, Graham, allow it? Anne is angry but powerless; she doesn’t know how to put a stop to it without looking pathetic and ridiculous.
That was just the second paragraph of the book. Do you see what I mean? Maybe it’s just me that it bothers!
Although I’m not overly happy with how the mystery was solved, I still enjoyed my reading experience and would recommend reading it for yourself. Let me know what you guys thought of The Couple Next Door by Shari Lapena! I would love to hear your opinions as well!
