She was the heir of ash and fire, and she would bow to no one.

Heir of Fire – Sarah J. Maas

Heir of Fire by Sarah J. Maas is the third book in the Throne of Glass series. Celaena must leave her old behind and travel to new lands to discover her past and who she truly is, Fae. With the introduction to new characters and the exit of some old ones, it’s like we get a new and exciting upgrade to the Throne of Glass series. One I am totally on board with!

The Good

First I want to talk about the fantasy portions. The first book dabbled in it, the second book was an appetizer, and Heir of Fire was the main attraction! In this book Celaena learns how to use and control her magic and how to use her it to her advantage against her enemies. Then we have the witches with razor sharp teeth and claws who are learning to fly using these dragon type creatures for war. And finally we have Dorian back at the castle trying hard to suppress the magic within himself that just wants to unleash itself onto the world.

Heir of Fire also introduces some new characters into the mix and by far one of my favorite characters in the series until now. Rowan, the fae prince. With his tough and hard exterior he exudes strength, wisdom, and power. But when he gets to know Celaena, his exterior begins to crumble and we get to see the vulnerable side of him. I absolutely love when a character has many dimensions to themselves and we get to see them grow as the story progresses.

Maas is a brilliant writer and amazing storyteller. She has mastered the art of character dynamics and world building. Thus, she has created an astounding high fantasy series that I adore and to be honest, wish would never have to end. But I know as long as there is young adult readers, she will produce many more great stories for us to obsess over!

The people you love are just weapons that will be used against you.

The Bad

There was very little wrong with this installment of the Throne of Glass series. Again, the writing at times is still choppy and messy. It’s a small inconvenience but does not take away from my overall enjoyment of the story. Thus, Heir of Fire remaining a 5 star read for me.

Their hands clasped between them, he whispered into her ear, “I claim you, too, Aelin Galathynius.

Sarah J. MaasSarah J. Maas is the New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of the Throne of Glass series (Queen of Shadows, Book 4, will be out in September 2015), as well as the A Court of Thorns and Roses series (out 5/5/15).

Sarah lives in Bucks County, PA, and over the years, she has developed an unhealthy appreciation for Disney movies and bad pop music. She adores fairy tales and ballet, drinks too much tea, and watches an ungodly amount of TV. When she’s not busy writing, she can be found exploring the historic and beautiful Pennsylvania countryside with her husband and canine companion.

  1. Great review! I’m currently in the middle of Heir of Fire and I’m enjoying it so far, though I am a little bored during some bits and I feel like this book could’ve cut out about 100 pages. Still it’s a fun read and I’m really enjoying Rowan – I like ’em feisty! 😉

  2. Heir of Fire is my all time favorite of the series. I love how there is so much character development for ALL the characters. Also, Rowan is just all **deep sigh** indescribable. He had his moments of harshness and cruelty, but he was suffering too. I really connected with all the characters in this book.
